Lake Mead is sitting at 1,040.85 ft as of Aug 3, 2026 — just 0.27 ft above its all-time record low set in July 2022.

That's 26.9% of capacity, down 13.3 ft over the past year. The Bureau of Reclamation's July 2026 study projects the lake could keep sliding toward 1,037 ft this fall. Boaters are being warned of newly exposed hazards as the water retreats.

The Colorado River basin's water crisis isn't easing up.

UK - Vegetables to get smaller and more expensive due to hot weather, farmers warn

by Alex Daniel and Esme Stallard, 5 August, 2026

"This year's harvest could be the worst on record as farmers warn the exceptionally dry spring and summer could lead to 'shrinkflation' in UK supermarkets.
England and Wales saw their driest July since records began 190 years ago, according to the Met Office, and a drought has been declared across large parts of the country.

"The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) thinktank said the UK's cereals and oilseed harvest could be 2.5 million tonnes less than earlier forecasts.

"Tim O'Malley, the chairman of Nationwide produce, said it was "as bad as its ever been" and that shoppers will likely see higher prices or smaller vegetables in supermarkets.

"The harvest of barley, oats and rapeseed, which are used in beer, breakfast cereals and vegetable oil, is estimated to drop to just 19.5 million tonnes, the worst since records began in 1984.

"That is compared with a previous low of 19.8 million tonnes in 2020, and would cost farmers £390m in lost revenue, the ECIU estimated.

"The crops are also used for feeding livestock, making them crucial across most of the food chain.

"O'Malley said consumers could feel the impact in the vegetable aisle too, where grocers are likely to swap in smaller produce at the same price, which is known as shrinkflation."

Future projections (2021–2100) of changes in global surface temperature are shown for very low (SSP1-1.9), low (SSP1-2.6), intermediate (SSP2-4.5), high (SSP3-7.0) and very high (SSP5-8.5) GHG emissions scenarios. Changes in annual global surface temperatures are presented as ‘climate stripes’, with future projections showing the human-caused long-term trends and continuing modulation by natural variability (represented here using observed levels of past natural variability). Colours on the generational icons correspond to the global surface temperature stripes for each year, with segments on future icons differentiating possible future experiences.

This project defies common sense - this is corporate welfare on a surreal scale, giving a gift to an industry making $90 billion in excess profits this year, and which still refuses to pay for its own infrastructure. It makes a mockery of the duty to consult First Nations, guaranteed under our constitution. You can’t approve a project and then engage in consultation: that is just a pipeline to the courts.

Until they use little to no fresh water for cooling, current plants are not a realistic solution to the fossil fuel transition and building new is ludicrous when renewables, even with battery systems, are orders of magnitude cheaper and less environmentally needy.

“The Arctic is cooking. Across northern Russia—a region that is famously bitterly cold—temperatures this week have routinely surpassed 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32.2 degrees Celsius), adding to the mountain of broken heat records this summer has racked up so far.

In recent days, the Selagoncy meteorological station, near the border of the Arctic Circle, recorded 93.0 degrees F (33.9 degrees C); another station, Olenyok, logged 90.9 degrees F (32.7 degrees C), according to data collected by weather information service Ogimet and reported by climatologist Maximiliano Herrera. To put that in perspective, these temperatures are on par for Orlando, Fla., at this time of year.”

This area is warming up in general up to four times faster than the average place anywhere else in the world.
