Atala Butterfly
These are rare in N.America, once thought extinct, even in South Florida.
One reason is that they depend upon one specific plant, the coontie.
From Florida Wildflower Foundation:
> "Coontie (Zamia integrifolia), North America’s only native cycad, is the host plant... The two have a mutualistic relationship."

Good morning. 🦢🪿🦆
11 June 2026
I just took my first sip of coffee — now what.
I’ve discovered it takes real effort these days to get myself together enough to leave the house. I used to be out the door in under an hour every morning. Nowadays, the idea of getting up and getting moving feels… optional. It still happens sometimes, of course — the horror 😱. At this hour, I say let the vegetative state take over. Who really needs movement or clear thoughts anyway. That calls for another sip of coffee. Help me, Mister Wizard — I don’t want to be a vegetable anymore 🐢🧙♂️. Some of you will get the reference.
I was thinking that maybe instead of coming straight into my office in the morning, a quick walk around the yard might get the blood moving, sharpen the senses, and make it easier to think while I write. Or I could just keep doing it my way and let my fingers do all the thinking.
I just got up to feed Charlie. After I set his bowl down, I decided to mess with him for a second — bent over with my hands on my knees and stared at him while he ate. He hates that. He’ll stop chewing and give me the side‑eye like I’m violating some sacred code. Sometimes he’ll growl, but not this morning. It’s a funny little behavior. Honestly, though, he stares at me when I’m eating, so maybe he should be a little more accepting when the tables turn 😂.
Well, I’ve got a big day ahead — full of things I may or may not do — and one of them actually requires me to leave the house. Since the others depend on me doing the first… well… it looks like I’m leaving the house.
