Here is a pic from my hike up to the ridge last month in the Presidential Range, White Mountains, NH. Above the tree line, there were significant fields of boulders and the "trail" was marked by cairns like this. I'm planning another trip to the ridge for sometime next month, but approaching from the other side of the ridge (east side). And, yes, more boulders!!

Photo of pile of rocks (cairn) on side of steep sloping rocky mountain. The side of the mountain is covered with large boulders. The mountain ridge that this is part of is seen in background. Blue skies with some clouds overhead.

This is at the beginning of Jewell Trail where it intersects Westside Trail. This is on the west side of the ridge of the Presential Range. Next month's hike is planned to approach the ridge from the east side.

            Emerald Setting

This female ruby‑throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) was one of several using the dead branches of our crepe myrtles as morning perches on 4 May 2024. Two or three of them rotated through the same spots, settling briefly before darting off again. The distance from where I was sitting is perfect for photographing slightly larger small birds like finches, but hummingbirds — being truly tiny — make that same distance feel much farther.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

            swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

In this photograph, a female ruby‑throated hummingbird perches on a slender branch that enters the frame from the bottom right and angles upward toward the top left. She faces forward and slightly to the right, her needle‑like black beak tilted gently skyward. Her dark right eye is visible, bright and alert, and the feathers atop her head shimmer with an emerald sheen.

The feathers along the front of her body are soft, fluffy white, giving her a delicate, downy appearance. Beneath the branch, her folded black tail feathers form a squared‑off shape, with the crisp white tips clearly visible. Her tiny feet curl neatly over the top of the branch, gripping it with effortless precision.

              Twin Lookouts

These two blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) are perched on top of the hanging bird feeder where I usually leave a few peanuts. At first glance they look like they’re just waiting for the store to open, but looks can be deceiving — I’m pretty sure there was a little tension between them over who got the prime spot.

If you enjoy wildlife and nature photography, check out my photo gallery here:

              swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

"Two blue jays perch on a weathered wooden structure, one above the other like sentinels sharing a lookout post.

The upper jay stands in full view, its crest lifted proudly, showing off a brilliant sweep of blue feathers that fade into soft gray along its chest. A sharp black line cuts across its face like a mask, framing bright, alert eyes that seem to study the world beyond the frame. Its wings and tail shimmer with layered blues — cobalt, sky, and indigo — patterned with delicate white bars.

Below it, partially tucked behind the wooden beam, the second jay peeks out. Only part of its body is visible, but the same vivid blues flash from its wings, and its pale underside glows softly in the filtered light. The wood around them is rough and sun‑bleached, adding texture and contrast to their sleek plumage.
The background melts into a gentle blur of muted greens and browns, making the birds’ colors pop as if they’re illuminated from within." - Microsoft Copilot

                Good morning. 🌻🌻🌻

                25 June 2026

I’m once again sitting here staring off into space, trying to put some thoughts down, and Charlie’s mealtime has arrived just in time to break the spell of my space‑staring.

The idea of a Space Force with real Guardians is cool. I love their dress uniforms, especially that diagonal front layer on the coat — very Buck Rogers‑ish. And with individual members called Guardians, it’s hard not to picture white armor and blasters. Honestly, I still wonder what was wrong with “spaceman.” I’d bet money that name was at least in the running. And here’s a thought — one you’ve had too, don’t deny it — aren’t they, for all practical purposes, Guardians of the Galaxy?

In the Army, in my official capacity, when I needed to address someone whose name or rank I didn’t know, I’d call them “soldier.” So I imagine that in the Space Force, when calling out to an individual member, an officer or NCO would call out “Guardian.” It sounds funny because so many comic book, fantasy, and sci‑fi characters carry that title, so our minds automatically make that connection. It’s biology.

But the meaning of “guardian” is straightforward: someone who watches, protects, and keeps others safe. I won’t pretend I know the full scope of what they do, but my guess is they watch — constantly. The U.S. Space Force exists to protect America’s satellites, secure the space domain, and ensure the entire military can communicate, navigate, and operate anywhere on Earth.

“We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us.” — Often attributed to George Orwell

“Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” — Carl Sagan

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” — Aristotle

                Wildfield Gold

"The flowers burst upward in a tight, sun‑bright cluster, each bloom a small flare of yellow against the muted earth beneath them. Their petals are smooth and slightly rounded, five or six to a flower, arranged like tiny golden stars pressed close together. The centers are deeper yellow, almost amber, giving each blossom a warm, glowing heart.

Slender green stems rise from the ground, branching into delicate leaves that frame the blooms without stealing attention. The leaves are narrow and slightly serrated, adding a soft texture around the flowers’ bright faces. The background is a blur of soil and stone, muted browns and grays that make the yellow stand out even more vividly — as if the flowers are lighting up their little corner of the world.

The whole scene feels lively and sun‑soaked, a patch of wild color thriving in a quiet, rugged place." - Microsoft Copilot

Went canoeing today on a river north of Boston. Very pleasant, ideal conditions. Saw a nice mix of turtles, swans and their cygnets, a heron, and expansive areas of flowering lily pads. So much nature to enjoy in spite of the river winding through neighborhoods!

                                          Angela Ferguson

"A rare chick has been hatched and raised by a same-sex penguin couple at Chester Zoo.

"The Humboldt chick is one of 10 to have hatched at the zoo, in what it described as a 'bumper year for penguins'.

"Scampi and Flounder, a pair of male penguins, 'stepped in to help raise one of two eggs laid by another penguin pair, Wotsit and Peach', the zoo said.

"The chicks are said to now be days away from taking to the water for the first time."

It was a gorgeous day on yesterday. Had dinner down by the watching the sun set. So beautiful!

The solstice tipped four days ago. The light has stopped lengthening, and the heat arrived anyway, late and furious.

In the Southeast the fireflies peak this exact week, rising out of the monkey grass like the yard is exhaling sparks. The brightest small fires arrive precisely as the days begin to shorten.
