While jogging yesterday I saw something scurrying around in the grass on the side of the road, so I stopped to take a look and a little kitten face popped out and meowed at me. So I brought it home and now it is in my room. It has been eating a lot, and doesn't appear injured or sick.

Asimina triloba. Our largest native fruit and the only one here that thinks it's tropical — bottomland shade, Georgia to Michigan, late August into September. Ripe means soft, the give of a peach three days past the store. Scoop the custard off the flat seeds and eat it standing up.

Then save a seed, because a pawpaw seed cannot be dried — let it dry and it dies. Rinse it, seal it in a bag with barely damp sphagnum, put it at the back of the refrigerator for ninety to a hundred and twenty days. Plant it an inch down in spring. Five to seven years later you're eating fruit no corporation ever priced.

The light in a kitchen where somebody puts seeds in the fridge for a tree they'll eat from in 2032 is a particular light.

What's the longest thing you've ever planted on purpose?

A flowering plant backlighted by warm sunlight.

The tall stem supports a cluster of delicate white to soft pink flowers and closed buds at the top. The translucent petals and fine hairs on the stem catch the golden light, giving the plant a glowing contour.

The background consists of soft, heavily blurred (bokeh) shapes with muted tones of slate blue, soft yellow, and warm peach.

In days gone by there was a land where the nights were always dark, and the sky spread over it like a black cloth, for there the moon never rose, and no star shone in the obscurity. At the creation of the world, the light at night had been sufficient.

Every day when the sun begins to set, our local crow and rook population comes together for a social gathering on the nearby fields. During daytime, they forage there for food in smaller numbers. But in the evening they just hang around doing absolutely nothing except softly murmuring to each other. It's the most wholesome thing to watch. After about 30 minutes, a small group decides to leave, and within a few moments everyone follows to return to their home trees. And, amazingly, while they're very vocal most of the time, no one says a word on this last flight of the day.

Gluons bind together protons & neutrons, but they can also stick to each other. No ordinary matter required.

Their caterpillars feed on willow and keep the Salicylic acid (think Aspirin) in their body, making them taste bitter.
