Birds in a summer forest is a handmade paper collage in portrait format by artist Karen Kaspar. The artwork shows three red birds sitting on slender branches of tall, slender trees. The tree trunks in dark brown tones stand out against the background in lush, vibrant green tones. Dense green foliage surrounds the trees and birds.         It was hard to get a good picture of these because the wind kept moving them, but I noticed these flowers growing in the wildflower mixture and they're mesmerizing! The way the color gradient goes from pink to violet to blue on one single stem, gorgeous!

        I had to look up what they were, they're called Viper's Bugloss and apparently are native to my country, just not very common in my specific region.

            My bike ride was a little later today and the wild critters were out. The bunny is a bit fuzzy because I had to zoom in. Can't get close enough for a good photo.

            The porcupine was another story. I saw it waddling up the trail and when I got closer it headed for the ditch and decided I couldn't see it if it remained perfectly still.

            "Here's my butt, weirdo. Keep moving."

                  Here is the view looking back toward the ridge and summit I had hiked up to last month in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, NH. At this point, I was traversing along a contour of the cone of the highest summit before I looped back down to the trailhead. Looking forward to returning to this ridge real soon!

                    🧊 Woolly mammoths were still alive when the Great Pyramid was already ancient.

                    A small population survived on Wrangel Island, a remote Arctic outpost in the Arctic Ocean, until roughly 2000 BCE. The Great Pyramid was completed around 2560 BCE - so by the time the last mammoths died, the pyramids had already stood for over 500 years.

                    Trapped by rising sea levels at the end of the Ice Age, this herd shrank to about two-thirds normal size over millennia of island isolation. A 2024 genome study found they stayed genetically stable for thousands of years with no signs of inbreeding collapse.

                    Then they suddenly vanished. Humans never reached the island in time to be blamed - the leading theory is just bad luck: a harsh weather event, a disease outbreak, or contaminated freshwater. A healthy population undone by a single roll of the dice.

                        Rice paddy pic No. 60.

                        This is a different location to the usual shots, but it is across the road from our other classroom which we only use on Mondays. The light was so attractive after a week of rain that I decided to grab some shots after classes finished. 5:30PM today.

                        A study of the same paddy introduced in No. 59. This shot is a portrait format featuring a thin strip of trees in the top fifth of the frame. The rest is rice plants and the edge of a smooth flat road along the right edge. The rice plants to the left are so tightly packed they look like a well cared for lawn but at the right edge the uniformity breaks up. Six lines of plants show enough distance between each other to give us a glimpse of the water they grown in. They curve into view and converge in the distance making patterns like the smoke trailing from aerobatic jets.

                            I've waited years to get a close view of a Bearded vulture (Lammergeier), to be able to see it's eye. I got one chance only on our recent trip to the Pyrenees. It was a very cool moment, we were sat resting, I happened to turn around and saw this immense bird coming our way, I quietly said to @elperronegro turn around look what's coming our way. I chose this photo as I believe it shows how big this bird is.

                                        by Andy Rouse "I never use flash with hummingbirds - this is a deliberate choice for lots of reasons, but one of them is that it allows me complete creative choice as to the shutter speed. Here the shutter speed was about 1/500 seconds, this is fast enough to get the body sharp, but slow enough to really blur the wings and give some shape. Had I of used a faster shutter speed - say 1/1000th the wings would have looked more frozen in space and a completely different effect achieved."
