              Peanut Heist

              I sat and watched this red bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) fly back and forth between a bird feeder hanging from my fence and an oak tree in my backyard. While at the bird feeder, he would dig through the bird seed until he found a peanut then fly away. I tried several times to catch him in the act of flying away, most only caught part of him in the frame. This is one of two in which I had him all in the frame
              making off with a peanut.

                    July 2, 1983, 43 years ago today: Took a day off in Waynesboro, VA. From May 18, 1983: From Georgia to Virginia run long intricate strands of interconnected mountain ranges anchored by the main fork of the Blue Ridge on the east and another fork far to the west. The deep gorges of major rivers such as the Little Tennessee divide this western fork into a series of separate mountain ranges.

                    Beneath a deep blue cloudless sky, we are following a trail along the crest of a mountain range through early springtime forests of trees that are either growing out large white or pink blossoms or bright green spring leaves. The sun-drenched forest floor is carpeted with lush green grass in most places.

                              Pearl has been ill for about a year. About two weeks ago she had decided to live outside and made herself a spot in the high grass in front of our house. We helped her with a huge laundry bag as a roof, blankets and hot water bottles. Now, she's back inside again with so much ichyness in her fur. She had run around through the house still scratching and crying for food.

                                      I read a whole lot in June! It has been very good. A distraction that is also deeply invasive and utterly important.
                                      I loved:
                                      I Who Have Never Known Men, A Protest History of the United States, and The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. Very excellent. And I couldn't get enough of Deborah Levy, particularly her nonfiction.

                                                    Went back a few days ago to the lavender patch and unfortunately it was pretty crispy and dried out and had very few bees. 😢 It was absolutely bustling a couple of weeks ago though! ✨
