This young blackbird has been stealing cat food off the porch for a few days now, one time even while Mama Lemon was sleeping three feet away. This time I was standing in the doorway. The little stinker just looked at me, went "sup?" and started munching. 😂

Alt...A bowl of cat food on a back porch, filmed from just inside a doorway. There is a (presumably) young Eurasian blackbird hopping around the bowl, looking at the camera and -seemingly not impressed with the human standing right there- taking pieces of kibble and eating them.

      Rice paddy pic No. 69.

A landscape format shot. The top third of the image contains a low skyline, to the right, the edge of a clump of trees and a necklace of homes on the horizon. These are interspersed with poles and power lines. The bottom two thirds contains an expanse of rice plants. There are no edges or lower stems. It is a sea of spiky green.

Kyrgyzstan creates a climate-ready snow leopard corridor.

Kyrgyzstan has formally protected the Ak Ilbirs ecological corridor, an 8,000 km² high-altitude passage for snow leopards, argali sheep, ibex and other fleet-footed mountain creatures.

Designated in 2025, it connects existing protected areas with pastures and forests across 14 rural municipalities, using climate forecasts to preserve future habitat as glaciers shrink and herders move higher.

More than 60% of projected suitable habitat for snow leopards now falls inside the corridor.

Guardian recreates audio landscape of past filled by loud morning symphony before 73m wild birds were lost

                              Fri 3 Jul 2026

"As the symphony of birdsong known as the dawn chorus draws to its annual close at the end of June, the Guardian has recreated an audio landscape from across the past 50 years to try to portray the variety and plentitude of birdsong we have lost since tens of millions more birds were in full voice. The calls and songs of a variety of species have been isolated to build an illustration of the dawn chorus, representing a year in each decade, from now back to the abundance of the 1970s.

"In April 1976, as the dawn chorus was in full swing, Labour’s Harold Wilson resigned as prime minister and James Callaghan took his place. Today, while remarkably similar political manoeuvrings are taking place, the soundscape of the is utterly changed to one of absences, omissions and loss."

A short climb on a side trail brought me to the summit of Black Rock (not to be confused with Blackrock, a peak I traversed further south in Shenandoah).

Several branches of a nearby pine tree frame the top and right side of our view. A couple hundred feet down the slope, a short stretch of the two-lane park road Skyline Drive is visible winding around the mountain we are on. Far below the road, the mountainside ends in a narrow valley. Beyond that valley are rugged, wooded mountains. One of them has a number of open grassy stretches on the side facing us, possibly ski runs.

migration, carries with it an uncomfortable ring of political language.
Looking back through time, the folly of sharing metaphors between those
who are against immigration of individual humans and those that seek to
conserve an ecosystem is laid bare. There is no such thing as a fixed ideal for
an environment, no reef onto which nostalgia can anchor. The human
imposition of borders on the world inevitably changes our perception of what
‘belongs’ where, but to look into deep time is to see only an ever-changing list
of inhabitants of one ecosystem or another. That is not to say that native
species do not exist, only that the concept of native that we so easily tie to a
sense of place also applies to time.

                                            Snails At Knepp (Gardener's Blog)
"Almost all snails make a significant contribution to the nutrient cycle – feeding on decaying and dead material, breaking it down into nutrient-rich organic matter for healthy soil ecosystems and plant growth. They’re food for all manner of mammals, birds and reptiles and many insects too "

                                                    Landscape

A landscape split into three distinct horizontal bands.

The bottom third of the image features a dense field of golden-brown wheat. The stalks are tightly packed together, creating a warm, textured layer.

Directly behind the wheat stands a tall, vibrant green wall of corn plants. The long, blade-like leaves creates a sharp, textured boundary line that sharply contrasts with the golden tones below.

The top half of the frame is dominated by a heavy, dramatic sky filled with thick, swirling clouds.

A square format shot of a lattice of rice plant leaves. Taken at 7AM this morning, beads of dew still cling to some of the blades. There is a dark unfocussed border in the far background along the top edge, but apart from that it is just dark green leaves with the sunlight making some of them slightly lighter, faintly transparent.
