Bumblebee

A bumblebee gathering pollen.

The core of the flower is a rich, golden-yellow disc filled with numerous tightly packed disc florets, surrounded by powdery yellow pollen.

The fuzzy bumblebee is positioned on the left side of the golden center.

The entire background is a soft, completely blurred green, which makes the central flower and bee stand out sharply.

              Yellowlegs in Flight

I captured this image of a yellowlegs gliding down the red‑clay bank of a small lake in Georgia. Based on the length of its bill, I believe it’s a greater yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca).

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

              swede1952-photographs.pixels.c

"A yellowlegs hangs suspended in mid‑flight, its wings stretched wide like two long, tapered blades slicing through the air. Each feather is sharply defined—dark charcoal on top, fading to softer gray toward the tips—giving the wings a textured, almost sculpted appearance.

Its underside is pale, nearly white, catching the light as it banks slightly, revealing the elegant curve of its body. The bill is straight, slender, and pointed—a precision instrument built for probing shallow water.

A subtle wash of orange warms the tail feathers, a small flare of color against the otherwise cool-toned plumage. The background behind the bird is a soft blur of reddish-brown earth, like sun‑baked clay, creating a warm backdrop that makes the bird’s gray and white tones stand out in crisp contrast.

The moment captured feels fast—an instant of motion frozen. You can almost sense the rush of air beneath its wings, the quiet determination of a bird built for long wading walks and sudden, graceful flights." - Microsoft Copilot with input and edits by the photographer

So I finished listening to this one today, and it talks about dragonflies and damselflies in rainwater runoff catch basins. You know those pits that you see where runoff is caught from parking lots. If those have a nice variety of aquatic plants growing in them, then they are important dragonfly habitat, even if the water quality is low. There might be seed bomb potential there.

                            IN DEFENSE OF PLANTS PODCAST
Ep. 585 - Dragonflies Need Plants

Dragonflies and damselflies are voracious aerial predators that help keep populations of other insects like mosquitoes in check.
These amazing insects also require aquatic habitats to complete their life cycles. Simply put, without wetlands we don't have dragonflies and damselflies. However, not all wetlands will do. My guest Dr. Mary Ann Perron is here to discuss why native aquatic plants are absolutely essential to the success of these insects. Join us as we discuss what makes a good wetland for dragonflies and damselflies and learn what you can do to help them out in your own community! This episode was produced in

Drought in our area is becoming incredibly heavy. Many gardens have given up. But we're still watering because what we grow us not just crops but hope for those in need. It's a tiring and hard work but every green leaf standing against drought is proof that we don't have to wait for rain to chose hope. Thanks to everyone that supports us in this journey.

First up is, Aftermath: Population Zero aka Aftermath: The World After Humans.

Imagine if one minute from now, every single person on Earth disappeared. All of us. Human history just stopped. What would happen to the world without us? Aftermath: Population Zero features what scientists and others speculate the earth, animal life, and plant life might be like if humanity no longer existed, as well as the effect that humanity's disappearance would have on the artefacts of civilization. this documentary is inspired by Alan Weisman's The World Without Us.

                                          Good morning. 😴⏰☕

                                          7 July 2026

I got up this morning and immediately started doing things. I knew better. My first bright idea was to empty the paper shredder — a terrible decision at that hour — but I had a foolproof plan: flip the container upside down into a plastic bag. Well, never underestimate a fool. Half the confetti slid straight down my front and the rest sprinkled across the floor like a ticker‑tape parade gone wrong.

I still haven’t cleaned it up. I’m waiting for the rest of the household to wake before I fire up the vacuum. At this time of morning, it’s usually just Charlie and me shuffling around. C’est la vie.

Do auto manufacturers even make hubcaps anymore? I haven’t owned a car with hubcaps in decades. My teenage dream was a ’55 or ’56 Chevy with black rims and baby‑moon hubcaps — a fantasy from a long, long time ago in a state far, far away. Instead, I wound up with a beat‑up Chevy pickup that had “potential,” but potential costs money, and I had none. Any repair parts came from the junkyard down the street. I think the truck had two, maybe three hubcaps. Three sounds odd, but it matched the mismatched retread tires perfectly.

If someone drew a comic strip of that era, it would only need two frames: Dream and Reality.

Honestly, I’m shortchanging the story, because that truck did have an 8‑track tape player bolted under the dash — ready to blast rock and roll through two old bare speakers I wedged behind the seat. That part was pure glory.

                                          Stillness on the Post

"A red‑bellied woodpecker stands perched atop an old wooden post, its entire form rendered in soft grayscale tones. The bird’s body is angled slightly to the right, giving the impression that it has just paused mid‑movement, alert and listening. Its feathers form a striking pattern even without color — the back covered in neat, ladder‑like stripes of pale silver and deep charcoal, each line crisp and orderly. The head is smooth and rounded, the beak long, sharp, and pointed forward like a tiny chisel made for carving into the world.

The woodpecker’s eye is a small dark bead, glinting with quiet intensity. Even in monochrome, you can sense its intelligence, its readiness to dart or peck at any moment.

The post it stands on is weathered and worn, a relic of time. Deep cracks run down its length, and a small round hole sits near the center — perhaps once carved by another bird. The wood’s texture is rough and splintered, contrasting beautifully with the sleek precision of the woodpecker’s feathers.

Behind them, the background is a soft, pale blur — empty, quiet, and gentle — making the bird and the post stand out like a sculpture. The entire scene feels still, calm, and timeless, as if the woodpecker has paused just long enough for the world to admire it." - Microsoft Copilot

Cattail — bog-luachair — the marsh's quiet pantry, standing in the shallow water at the edge of ditches you've walked past your whole life.

Shake the ripe spike over a bowl and it gives up a golden, protein-rich flour. Fold it half-and-half for pancakes the color of the sun.

That was many years ago on a New Year’s Day walk. Unfortunately, you don’t always get lighting like that. I’m very glad there weren’t any tourists in the way.

I’ve just been clicking through lots of photos in my collection again. Lost places, lonely mountains, narrow streets in big cities... I realised that I’m actually always off the beaten track. In that case, I might as well send a photo from home. And here we are now ;-).

A tranquil forest scene illuminated by soft golden sunlight filtering through tall, densely packed trees. The image captures an early morning or late afternoon atmosphere, with long beams of light piercing through a light mist or fog in the woodland. The forest floor is covered with small evergreen saplings, low shrubs, and reddish-brown autumn leaves, creating a rich contrast against the dark tree trunks. Bare branches and sparse foliage suggest a late autumn or early winter season. The composition emphasizes depth, natural textures, and the serene mood of a quiet woodland landscape. Warm amber highlights and cool shadows create a cinematic and atmospheric effect.

But I didn’t manage to produce anything particularly spectacular with it. I took this photo with a 300mm telephoto lens. An unexpected lesson.
