I've started reading a book called The Hot Zone, it's pretty interesting so far! It's a fascinating true story about the discover of an Ebola relative virus in the US... Scary to think how serious it could have been and a good reminder that real people are enduring even worse at the moment!

I am so excited but also so frustrated right now! I recently discovered a fantastic French thriller author, Franck Thilliez. I just read Le Manuscrit and Il était deux fois (Double Take) and they blew my mind. 🤯 The tragedy? His books aren't translated into English! To all my fellow thriller lovers who read in French (or translation), you need to check him out. #ReadingCommunity

I finished The Castle of Otronto the other day. It had some interesting moments and largely kept me engaged, but as for the story, I found it terribly unsatisfying to simply have Manfred shuffled off to a monastery. Sure, he lost his kingdom, but frankly he deserved worse.

I suppose it inadvertently reinforces the notion that other people pay the price for the crimes of the wealthy and powerful and justice is largely a fable.

That may sound cynical, but is it not true?

                The Greenland Diaries: Day 65

I spent all last night giving Snowy teaspoons of Benadryl. Her ears look the worst from the allergic reaction, they’re raw with red sores, which look like they could pop open from the slightest turn of her head. She slept through the night fine thanks to the medicine. I wish I knew how much to give her, and how often. You take for granted all this knowledge when you have no access to it. The whole world was plugged in and then wrenched apart by these monsters.

There would always be Wikipedia, or Google to answer all my puzzles. I’m not even sure where the library might be from here, but that’s the only place holding any knowledge.

There weren’t any illusions floating around the darkness of the Drum last night, just the distant thunder of a monster-soaked world. I wonder if the wet air stopped all the spores from floating around, just like the night before with all the heavy rain. The Unnamed must have cloaks of spores, which camouflage them. The ones who screamed the other night, they said the speeding car was made of them.

Clearly there must be a connection.

When the morning finally appeared and knocked the Drum away, a surprise was waiting outside my house. Gerald was back. He was actually clean and washed, and less gaunt than when he wandered off weeks ago.

I couldn’t believe how happy I was to see him. Snowy ran out for a belly-rub in the long grass. Gerald was happy to see us, and was carrying a bag of water and canned food.

He’d gone looking for his children. He found a few clusters and colonies of people who had banded together to survive the nights. The biggest colony he found was in Brooklyn Center and had over a hundred people living inside of it. Every night they’d find hiding spots and places and looked out for one another with the Unnamed.

He said they nursed him back to health when he staggered into the camp. They’d basically saved his life. He decided to come back to Robbinsdale to find me and take me there. I couldn’t help but hug the little old man and lift him off the ground.

I was so tired of us being alone in the darkness.

Tomorrow, we’ll walk to the camp during the day. He said they had networks set to find lost relatives. He didn’t hear anything about his kids, but maybe I would hear something about my parents, Ling, or more.

I’m feeling so much better about the Drum. Even more amazing, when Gerald related this entire story to me outside my shed, he referred to the monsters as the Unnamed.

                Those kids listened to me.

Having grown detached of top football over the past decade or so I've spent most of the ongoing FIFA World Cup reading Jonathan Wilson's excellent history of the biggest show on earth.

And what a trip it was. It's quite an undertaking to squeeze in about 100 years of World Cup history into about 600 pages, but the reader is given a great overview of all the politicking and shenanigans on and off the pitch.

Murder in the Reading Room by Anita Davison

After reading a few early reviews, I discovered that this book is the last of this series. I have only read the last two, so I do have more to catch up on.

In this one, Hannah and her new husband have moved into the Brunswick Hotel that Aunt Violet and Aiden own while renovating their own home. Darius and Hannah are newlyweds. Aunt Violet is fighting for the right for women to vote while Aiden is retired from the police department. They all live a life of luxury that is appealing. Matilda is a friend of Hannah’s who is also a journalist for a local paper.

This series is set in London after the war.

A friend of Aiden’s is found dead in the reading room of a local museum and Hannah and Matilda happen to be there when the body is found. Of course, they investigate.

Now that Aiden is retired from the police force, he is more willing to work with Hannah and Violet.

Besides the death, an art piece that may be priceless disappears.

The three women find themselves in dangerous situations as they follow the clues. They are introduced to the family who own the art object. One member of the family believes the stories told by her grandfather that it belonged to a famous Italian family over 500 years ago. The rest of the family think it is a reproduction.

The victim had contacted an authority to evaluate the object before his death. The person contacted shows up after the murder and he becomes involved in the investigation as well.

There are several suspects for the sleuths to interview, and it becomes difficult to figure out who to believe.

As they are investigating the crime, we get to know Hannah, Matilda and Violet better.

This is an interesting series. I enjoy the author’s voice and find myself often pulled into the scene feeling as though I was more than a reader.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a cozy historical mystery set in England. The characters are interesting and likeable. I do feel sad that this will be the last in the series. I would like to know more about the future. Since I had read the previous book in this series, I was already a fan.

This new release was published on June 29, 2026.

Other books in this series by Anita Davison:

Last Night was Killer by Mary Pauline Lowry

Our weather has been extremely off so far this year, and it continues into the summer. We are in the middle of a heat wave, but storms came through last night leaving over ten inches in a city near me. Luckily my favorite past time is reading.

                                        Weekly Update #247

                                        Hello Readers.

I’m starting my third week of not smoking and the patches are holding up well. I do have the occasional urge to smoke, but a hard candy is helping with that.

Just before starting this update, I took a quick walk around my neighborhood and came across this:

Isn’t it just cute! Makes me feel good every time I see one in an unexpected place.

During this past week, I made some good progress towards “Death and a Dog.” I’m about two-thirds done with it so hopefully, I’ll have the draft done this coming week.

The last couple days I’ve spent working on some templates for some new marketing for my books. Now with the first major template done, I should be able to start updating my marketing pics.

That is it for this week, take care everyone.
