Y'all, let's talk about #WAZE. It is blowing up on the socials because someone read the #TOS. This happens every couple of years. The terms everyone is freaking out about is that the app, even though owned by #google, is protected by #Israel's laws, not #US. But only for #Americans. The #EU app doesn't have that provision.

The US provision has been there since 2008. What should be of more concern is that it was founded by members of #8200, and it is possibly the largest continuously updating surveillance database in the world.

Researchers say that it is still possible to identify and track users of the platform via api interception. (I have not verified.)

I wouldn't install it. Your risk acceptance level may be different. But the TOS hasn't changed. They've always been #Israeli crowdsourced #surveillance.

Just an idea for UK/EU digital legislation.

All non-FOSS, proprietary mobile apps must have a web alternative. This will allow people to use services without relying on Apple/Google services and telemetry via a phone web browser of their choice (rather than having to download the app).

Yes - there'll be plenty of cases where this can't happen, but I think it's a good starting point.

It requires Apple and Google to check the age of every user who tries to download an app and to get parental consent before letting any user under 18 install anything. Texas is the first state in the country to move this kind of law from the individual-website level, all the way up to the app store itself. U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman blocked SB 2420 in December 2025, saying the law violates the First Amendment. The 5th Circuit stayed his order on June 4, 2026, letting Texas begin enforcement. A lot has been written about the environmental cost of the AI-driven data centre boom. That includes the massive environmental cost in terms of water, carbon pollution, and energy use.

But a hidden cost is land.

In the middle of a housing crisis, data centres are using a lot of land that could be used for housing.

The latest example is in Geelong, where data centre operator NextDC just land-banked 169 hectares of land thst had been zoned for residential housing.

For folks reading this outside of Australia: Geelong is the second biggest city in the state of Victoria, after Melbourne.

The city's population is booming, with its metro area growing from 180,000 people in 2010 to 280,000 in 2020.

That's a rate of 100,000 people in just 10 years.

"Australian data centre giant NextDC has bought $165 million worth of land earmarked for thousands of new homes on the outskirts of Geelong, in a move likely to intensify debate over the rapid expansion of such centres around Victoria.

"Property settlement documents seen by The Age reveal a new subsidiary of ASX-listed NextDC finalised the purchase of 169 hectares in Lovely Banks, about 13 kilometres north-west of the Geelong CBD, this month.

HORRIFIC: Waymo robotaxi kidnaps and imprisons teenagers

This story is much worse than I realized. Those drinking teenagers who were shooting Orbeez from a Waymo were not just reported to the police, Google/Alphabet literally kidnapped them, locking them helplessly in the vehicle, until police arrived. This is a scenario I predicted years ago, robocars kidnapping passengers and taking them against their will to "authorities". Imagine what Trump's DOJ would do with this power.

Despite the fact that these teens were engaging in low level misbehavior, Google/Alphabet is NOT supposed to be an arresting agent of the government. What if one of those teens had suffered a medical emergency locked in that vehicle? THIS IS HORRIFIC.

"On Monday, Illinois Governor #JBPritzker signed the #ArtificialIntelligence Safety Measures Act into law, giving the Midwest state arguably the strictest set of regulations yet designed to protect its citizenry from the risks posed by the growing power of frontier AI companies.

"According to a press release from the Governor’s office, the AI Safety Measures Act creates a framework that will require the 'developers of the largest advanced AI systems' (read: #OpenAI, #Anthropic, #Google, etc.) to provide public disclosures as to their safety practices, report any significant #SafetyIncidents, and remain in line with a set of compliance processes. It also creates a channel for #whistleblowers working inside AI labs to safely and securely relay any safety concerns they might have without fear of repercussions.

"A lot of the law is in line with what states like #California and #NewYork have passed already, but Illinois is claiming a 'first-in-the-nation' distinction for one major part of its efforts: It is the only state that will require AI systems to undergo regular, independent third-party safety audits. That requirement will apply to any AI company reporting more than $500 million in revenue. Those requirements are set to go into effect on January 1, 2028, now that the bill has been signed into law."
