She’s small and cute, but this half-demon New Yorker lives to exterminate demons, because they murdered her parents. The demonic curse preventing her from saying anything but “it’s a secret” only fuels her desire for revenge.

(Left) The cover of She Hunts Demons, by Owen Tyme, illustrated by Ryan Johnson.

Sitting on the roof of a building in New York City is a teenage girl wearing an old, black dress, fingerless, elbow-length black gloves and a battered, black top hat, with a blue rose attached to the band. The tearing of her clothes hints that she's recently been in a fight. Her hair is short, but messy. Her eyes are blue.

In her hands is a wakizashi, a short sword of Japanese design. The tsuba, or hilt guard, is in the shape of an opening, blue rose. The blade shines blue.

The image is black and white, aside from the details in blue, hinting at film-noir influences in the art.

(Right) An image of a dog with glowing, red eyes, with the following text laid over it:

“Will we ever be safe again?”

“Your people call you traitor, as do mine. Hunted by Heaven and Hell alike, there’s nowhere we could turn for peace.”

“Will our daughter ever know peace?”

“I pray she will.”

(Center) Pride needs a half-demon to stabilize the portal between worlds.

There’s just one hitch: she hates him.

One stubborn half-demon vs. all of demon-kind?

It could go either way...

Quasit's Daily Book Recommendations: "The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories" (1908) by Lord Dunsany

          Category: 15 to adult
          Genre: Fantasy

Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany (otherwise known as Lord Dunsany) was a major influence on the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, H. P. Lovecraft, Ursula K. Le Guin, and others. He was an early pioneer in the field of fantasy, and his work was •amazing•. I discovered him via a story that Larry Niven wrote in the style of Dunsany, and became a fan for life.

At the time, it wasn't easy to find his books. They were long out of print in the USA. The Internet was barely in existence, and the web wouldn't be a thing for years. Luckily my college library had a number of small books bound in green leather; they hadn't been borrowed in more than 25 years when I discovered them. How weird is THAT?

"The Sword of Welleran and Other Stories" was the third collection of Dunsany's stories. The stories in this book range from sword-and-sorcery to fairy tales to tales that defy categorization. I'm particularly fond of "The Kith of the Elf Folk", which is really touching and magical; it's the story of a Wild Thing from the marshes who hears the bells of a cathedral.

[And the little Wild Thing said: ‘I want to have a soul to worship God, and to know the meaning of music, and to see the inner beauty of the marshlands and to imagine Paradise.’

And the Oldest of the Wild Things said to it: ‘What have we to do with God? We are only Wild Things, and of the kith of the Elf-folk.’

But it only answered, ‘I want to have a soul.’

Then the Oldest of the Wild Things said: ‘I have no soul to give you; but if you got a soul, one day you would have to die, and if you knew the meaning of music you would learn the meaning of sorrow, and it is better to be a Wild Thing and not to die.’

          So it went weeping away.

But they that were kin to the Elf-folk were sorry for the little Wild Thing; and though the Wild Things cannot sorrow long, having no souls to sorrow with, yet they felt for awhile a soreness where their souls should be, when they saw the grief of their comrade.]

          It's a beautiful book.

Dunsany's works are back in print, but virtually all of his fantasy is back in print. It's also available in ebook form, both from the usual sources and free in all the major formats online from Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks:

Nicole seeks to collect the missing fragments of the magical city of Kurg from her home world, but the remaining pieces were deactivated and are hard to find. Luckily, she just found the first piece of the Seventh Sage, an ancient stone man that knows the future, which she hopes knows where to find them.

At the center is a hexagonal coin with a golden appearance,. That bears a watercolor painting of a woman's face, which drips paint as if it were fresh.

Following the edges of the coin, the background is divided by a spiral of black lines into six images representing vital pieces of the titular stone prophet.

Upper right is an attractive woman with blue eyes and blond hair that's almost white. She stands in place of Memory.

Right is an eye with a blue iris surrounded by blue skin and golden decorations, representing Vision.

Lower right is a hooded woman in darkness, partially illuminated by a purple triangle that magically restrains her. She is Skill.

Lower left is a heart made of and resting in blue sand, with yellow light inside. That shines through cracks, hinting at fragility. This is Emotion.

Left is a gray sphere covered in black zeros and ones. More zeros and ones lay over the top, in blurred white. This is Reason.

Upper Left is a brass statue of justice, wearing a robe and blindfold. She holds a sword and scales. Behind her are the stars of space. This is Heart.

(Right) The same attractive woman from the upper right section of the cover, looking right at the viewer. The following quote frames her face, above and below:

“Will she do what must be done, for the good of all?”

Alt...The Ballad Singer by David Macklise, 1858. Richly rendered, an attractive woman in a red cloak has a baby on her back and carries a basket of fruit. A rose pinned to her yellow blouse, she is clearly about to do a hard sell on the long thin printed ballad in her hands
